Rogers Stirk Harbour has been chosen to design a new headquarters building in Mexico City.

The firm has teamed up with local practice Legorreta & Legorreta for the building, which will be the new home of Mexican bank Bancomer and Spanish financial institution BBVA.

The 221m-high tower will feature 50 floors and cover 78,600sq m of office space along with a car park capable of holding nearly 3,500 vehicles.

Richard Rogers said: “The form of this building is based on a rethinking of conventional approaches to office space. The design creates a new hierarchy of vertical communities or ‘villages’ with open areas where staff and visitors can meet and enjoy spectacular views across the city.”

The building is due to be completed in 2013 and will house 4,500 employees.

The structure will be designed by Arup and Mexican firm Colina de Buen using the latest earthquake technology.
