Italian architect Renzo Piano, the designer of the Art Institute of Chicago’s under-construction Modern Wing, on Thursday was named the 2008 winner of the American Institute of Architects’ Gold Medal, the highest honor that the institute confers on an individual.

The Washington, D.C.-based group also named Chicago architect and educator Stanley Tigerman the 2008 winner of its Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education. A former head of the University of Illinois at Chicago’s architecture school, Tigerman is co-founder of Archeworks, a socially-oriented Chicago design school.

In October, he announced that he and his co-founder, Chicago interior designer Eva Maddox, would soon turn over the school to new leaders.

Already a winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, Piano has completing buildings ranging from the Menil collection in Houston to the recently completed New York Times headquarters in Manhattan. The institute, which awards the Gold Medal for a significant body of work that has had a lasting influence on architecture, praised his buildings as “sculptural, beautiful, technically accomplished and sustainable.”

Its framing now almost complete along Monroe Street just south of Millennium Park, Piano’s Modern Wing is scheduled to open in 2009.

Tigerman, meanwhile, was called “a non-pareil instructor whose impact on the students he has taught formally and informally for so long is magnified many times over by the informed and passionate love of architecture those students, now teachers and practitioners themselves, bring to the world.”

Piano is the 64th winner of the Gold Medal. Previous winners include Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, I.M. Pei and Santiago Calatrava, the architect of the under-construction Chicago Spire.
